Killarney Mall is a community centre where we base the importance of building a relationship between the mall and the direct community & residents within Houghton, Killarney, and Norwood. COVID lockdowns and restrictions created a sense of separation from mall and shoppers as many of our residents were weekly shoppers pre-COVID. With the widely recognized and celebrated public holiday of Freedom Day approaching we saw an opportunity that could reconnect to our community and give back to a charitable cause in our main catchment area. This was a way to give back and build a stronger connection to our community.

The Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund islocated just 1km from Killarney Mall, after meeting with representatives who expressed a dire need of support for awareness for the Nelsons Mandela Children’s Hospital who do lifesaving operations daily, we devised a concept that would assist in supporting donations and much-needed awareness for the #Servelikemadiba and give like they are yours” which was inspired from of Madiba’s legacy. We saw this as a perfect partnership to Freedom Day. We understood that donations were a challenge with shoppers on tighter budgets due to COVID effects.
